Homemade Flour Tortillas

Homemade Flour Tortillas

It’s happened to all of us.  You know what I mean…

It’s a late night.  One o’ clock in the morning.  And you’re hungry.  You’re not just hungry for any old thing; it’s a specific craving.  You’re hungry for tacos.  Taco Bell is closed so you figure you have to make the tacos for yourself, but (oh, no!) you’re out of tortillas.  So you check your phone and realize that all of the grocery stores near you are closed as well, so you’re smack out of luck. But are you really? No, you’re not!  Making tortillas is easy!  And once you’ve made your own homemade tortillas, you’ll never want to get the store bought kind again!  Here’s how you do it…

The Ingredients:
(Simple and cheap ingredients)

2 Cups of All-Purpose Flour

½ Teaspoon Salt

1 Teaspoon Baking Powder

1 Tablespoon Lard

¾ Cups of Water

(This will make about 12 Tortillas.  If you’d like to make more or less, prorate the ingredients to your pleasure.)

The simple steps to satisfying your craving are as follows:

  • Mix together the flour, salt, and baking powder in a bowl
  • Add the lard to the mixture and mix with hands

(Lard and flour mix)

  • Add the water to the mixture and mix until you have a fine looking dough
  • Place on a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth
  • Divide the dough into 12 pieces and roll them into balls
  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat (use a reliable skillet that won’t burn)
  • Using a rolling pin, flatten a dough ball until it is a tortilla (you’ve seen them before)
  • Place the flattened dough into a skillet and cook it until it’s golden brown, then flip it and do the same to the other side
  • Do the same thing to all twelve pieces

And voila!  That’s it.  Easy as pie, right?  So easy that we should change that saying to ‘easy as tortilla’ (ba-dum-chh!).  So now that you have those tortillas, get ready to make those tacos…unless you’re out of beef too.  Then, yeah, you really are just smack out of luck.  But, oh well, there are a lot of things you can do with a tortilla.  Look around your kitchen and see what other kind of wrap you can make (a chicken wrap, maybe?)  Or you could even just eat the tortillas by themselves.  They’re tasty.
