What Is A Serrated Knife?

Serrated knives are very similar to saws in terms of design. Edge of the knife has the saw tooth form called serrations which bite into your bread at different points. One of the differences between a smooth knife and a serrated one is that the smooth knife has more contact during the cutting process. On the other hand, serrations allow to you apply more pressure with less effort while cutting.

Slicing certain food with serrated knifes is much more efficient. Bread and tomatoes are the best example. If you slice bread or tomatoes with smooth edge knives then there is a big chance that they will get messy, at least partially. It is also interesting that fewer serrations make better slices when cutting bread and similar.

What to Look For When Buying A Bread Knife?

Bread knives are probably one of the longest knives in the kitchen. They usually come in 8 to 10 Inch sizes. Cutting cakes, pastries, soft fruits, and cheese are also made easy with them.

Bread knives are evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Serration type
  • Handle
  • Blade shape

If you know which types are better, then you will get the best knife. First thing you should check on a bread knife is the serration style. Some of them have more narrow points while other are built more aggressive. Your goal is to get the narrower one with less serration points because less serration provides more pressure. This way you can slice all clean with less crumbs. The bread knife handle is pretty important too when you are carving through crusty breads. It should be easy to grip not smooth. You will have more control and comfort with grippy knives.

Another feature to check is the blade shape and thickness. Some bread knives have a slightly curvy blade and some have straight ones. Curved blade will make it easier for you to move the knife back and forth while cutting.  You can still get the straight bladed knife if the serration is good on it. But just keep in mind that it is much easier to use the slightly curved blade. And last but not least; make sure to select the thinner option in terms of blade thickness. You will find out that cutting with thin blade is always easier than using a thicker one.

How Do I Maintain My Bread Knife?

Please keep in mind that all bread knives are made out of food grade stainless steel but you should never wash them in the dishwasher. You would decrease their durability, lifespan and sharpness significantly. Also, never use dish soaps with citrus or bleach when washing the bread knife. Rinse and then dry it with a towel, do not let it sit on the drainer.

Apply food grade mineral oil when not in use and store your knife in dry place. And, don’t forget to get a good cover for your beautiful bread knife, it deserves it!

Can You Sharpen A Bread Knife?

Yes, you can sharpen a bread knife with a serrated sharpening tool made specifically for these kinds of knives. It is easy to find one in any culinary store. Some people also use ceramic sharpening rod. A few strokes (2-3 times) on each serration division would be enough as these sharpeners are very effective. Go through on each tooth one by one.

Some bread knifes have blades with laser cut edges. These kinds of knives cannot be sharpened. You should check your product manual carefully to prevent making any damage to your precious knife.

In Conclusion

The term ‘cut like pro’ actually refers to ‘cut with the right knife’. If you don’t have the right tool in your hand then you can’t cut the right way and your slices will be messy. Serration on a bread knife is the most important factor for determining the quality of the slices you will get. You will have prefect bread slices if you get the one with narrower serrations, curvy blade and easy grip handle; so, choose wisely.
